The open format family room was not quite up to snuff with the kitchen remodel we had completed a year before (Claustrophobic Kitchen). The homeowners wanted the family room to be as updated as the kitchen and for the two rooms to blend together more seamlessly.
How We Proceeded
To accomplish this, we needed to replace the carpet with the same white oak flooring from the kitchen. Then, from several photos the homeowners had collected, we selected the appropriately sized linear fireplace and stacked stone for the surround.
The custom built-ins were then designed to provide some hidden storage as well as display space. We then removed all the old six-inch recessed light fixtures and replaced them with sleeker four-inch fixtures. The television, speakers and electronics were all updated.
Designer Tip: When lighting open display cabinets, use glass shelves to allow the light to travel from top to bottom. From a distance, these shelves look like they are made of wood, but they actually have glass inserts. Another option is to use LED strip lighting on the bottom of each shelf. This option can generate harsh lighting and get expensive quickly!
