Revamp a very poorly executed laundry room into a laundry/mudroom and accommodate some space that could be used for serving large gatherings – a butler’s pantry.
How We Proceeded
The room’s existing size was perfect for the laundry/mudroom. There was considerable space available for these two functions. Adding the butler’s pantry did, however, push the envelope a bit.
The location was perfect for a mudroom because one of the entries, to the room, is from the garage – the day-to-day entrance for the homeowners. The laundry was a no-brainer – that’s where it already resided which meant there was no need to relocate any plumbing.
But because the house had no butler’s pantry (or other available space for it), we decided to carve out some space that could be used for serving large gatherings. The location was again excellent. It is just steps from the kitchen and because of the entry from the garage, caterers would have easy access for loading and unloading without having to go through the house.
To gain countertop space on the laundry/pantry side of the room, we raised it and ran it over the top of the washer and dryer. The countertop was then lowered to a standard countertop height for the butler’s pantry sink. With 10-foot ceilings and a raised countertop, we were able to accommodate literally a ton of storage above and below. A wine cooler was the finishing touch to the butler’s pantry section.
On the opposite side, just inside the garage door, we added a very large painted section of cubbies to hang your coat and drop packages as you walked into the house. This section also provides a considerable amount of storage both below the seat and above the coat cubbies.
The final area of the room consists of a very generous coat closet and broom closet. We designed the broom closet with an operable toe kick and no bottom to the cabinet. A vacuum cleaner could just be rolled in without the need to lift it.
