Smoke Detector Maintenance

Da Vinci Remodeling Maintenance Tip

March 8, 2009

It's time to change your clocks and Spring Forward!  This is also a reminder to change the batteries in all your smoke detectors and Carbon Monoxide detectors.  Below are some simple smoke detector maintenance tips to help keep your home and family safe.

Change the batteries twice a year.  Although there is no reason it must be done when you change your clocks, clock changing is a good reminder for battery changing.

Vacuum the units once a year.  Dust collecting in the smoke detector can cause false alarms and/or chirping.  Excessive dust in the unit can also cause the unit to fail when its needed.

Replace smoke detectors every 7 – 10 years.  They don’t work forever.

Info Tidbit: When we spring forward, we begin “Daylight Saving Time”.  Note it’s not “Daylight Savings Time”.
